A good campsite runs on a few systems working together: shelter, sleep, cooking, light and warmth. Forget one piece - the tent poles, the lighter, the sleeping pad - and the whole trip feels it. This camping packing list is organised around those systems so nothing essential slips through.

It's built for car camping, where comfort is worth its weight, but you can trim it toward a lighter setup in PackParrot. Load it, adjust it to your site and season, and check things off as the car gets loaded.

Adjust it for how long you're going

An overnight needs the full shelter, sleep and cooking setup no matter what - you can't skip the tent for one night - so the savings come from food and clothing. For multi-day trips, plan meals and water in advance, pack a cooler with a clear system, and bring enough fuel for every cook. Longer trips reward a tidy, repackable kit over more stuff.

Adjust it for the weather

Match your gear to the season and forecast: a sleeping bag rated below the expected overnight low, a tent with a full rain fly, and a ground tarp for wet sites. Cold nights call for an insulated sleeping pad as much as a warmer bag, since most heat is lost to the ground. Always pack a warm layer and rain protection even for a fair forecast - weather turns fast outdoors. You can also let PackParrot suggest changes from the forecast - enter your destination and dates and it adapts the list for you.

Easy to forget

Don't leave without:
  • A headlamp or lantern plus spare batteries
  • Matches, a lighter and fire starter
  • A mallet for tent stakes and a groundsheet
  • Insect repellent and after-bite cream
  • Trash bags and a way to pack out rubbish
  • A basic first aid kit and any medication

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to pack for camping?

The core systems: shelter (tent, fly, stakes, groundsheet), sleep (bag, insulated pad, pillow), cooking (stove, fuel, cookware, utensils), lighting (headlamp, lantern), plus food, water, warm clothing and a first aid kit. The checklist above groups it all - load it into PackParrot and adapt to your trip.

What's the difference between car camping and backpacking gear?

Car camping lets you bring comfort - a bigger tent, a cooler, camp chairs - because you're not carrying it far. Backpacking strips everything to lightweight essentials you can carry on your back. This list leans toward car camping; use our backpacking list for a lighter setup.

What sleeping gear do I need for camping?

A sleeping bag rated below the coldest night you expect, an insulated sleeping pad to block cold from the ground, and a pillow or stuff sack. The pad matters as much as the bag - most warmth is lost downward into the ground.

What cooking gear should I bring camping?

A camp stove with enough fuel, a pot and pan, utensils, a mug and plate, a lighter or matches, and biodegradable soap for cleanup. Plan meals ahead and pack a cooler with ice packs for anything perishable.
